Kathleen Slater was born in 1970 to parents Charlie and Vivienne Slater. Known as Kat, she had a tirbulent childhood. Her uncle, Harry sexually abused her and impregnated her. The pregnancy was kept a secret, aided by her family. She gave birth to a baby girl, named Zöe. Zöe was raised as Kat's sister for many years. It was only revealed when Zöe announced that she was going to leave Walford to work for pervy uncle Harry that Kat confirmed that in fact she was Zöe's mother. This brought the iconic scene of "you ain't my mother!", "YES I AAAAMMM!". Zöe and Kat's relationship became strained and Zöe left Walford.
Despite having a fling with Paul Trueman, Kat and Alfie developed a blossoming romance in the 2000s, working together behind the bar of The Queen Victoria. Cheeky chappy Alfie and feisty Kat struck up a great rapport. They married and left Walford in 2005. A heavily pregnant Kat, and Alfie returned to The Square in 2010, as the Square was shook by The Vic' fire. Heavily pregnant Kat settled back in and soon became chums with flame haired and mouthy Bianca Jackson. They worked together on the familiar surroundings of the Bridge Street market, heckling and tormenting the eccentric and pompous Inspector Lister. Kat embarked on a shock afair in the Square with Del Branning, elder brother of Max Branning. She would call him in the night, begging for a sexual fix. She had Alfie, the love of her life but she seeked excitement and danger. The affair was eventually revealed, resulting in turbulence for Kat & Alfie. Kat was also bereft when future cousin-in-law to be Ronnie Mitchell swapped her dead baby for Kat's healthy baby in the dead of night. This caused great agony amongst the Moon family. Fortunately, Kat discovered the truth and was relieved to have her own baby back in her arms.
In 2015, Kat met a Catholic nun, who shockingly revealed that Kat gave birth all of those years ago, not just to Zöe, but also to a son, a twin birth. Kat was aghast. How could this have been possible? Sure enough, it was and Kat ventured out to Ireland in search of her son. They arrive in Redwater and Kat finally gets to meet her son Dermott, also known as Luke. This brings Kat's offspring to the total of five, with Zöe, Thomas, Bert and Ernest. Kat and Alfie returned to Walford but went their seperate ways.
Kat developed a romance with Kurush Kazemi. However, Kurush's life was cut short when evil killer Gray Atkins pushed him under an Underground Train. This was more tragedy in a traumatic half century of Kat's life.
Realising a sense of entrepreneurship, Kat opened up her own taxi firm, Kat's Cabs, at the site of the Launderette. Business proved popular. Kat decided to share the site with Karen Taylor, who is the neighbourhood washer woman.
Kat grew close to long time neighbour, Walford gangster Phil Mitchell. They became a blended family, with Phil, Kat, Tommy, Bert & Ernest all living together at Phil's. After a while, marriage was on the cards and they became engaged. Their happiness was stemmed when Phil was sent to prison for his involvment of the killing of Vincent Hubbard. On the outside, Kat helped launch the new addition to the Mitchell empire, Peggy's - a chic wine bar on the site of former Ruby's nightclub. To Kat's dismay, Phil also acquired the help of his sister, Sam. Kat initially treated Sam with disdain, treating her as a spoilt airhead. However, when there was a seige at Peggy's and Sam took a bullet for her, Kat developed respect for Sam. Phil and Kat's relationship became strained. When scheming Sam had a bullet delivered to Kat's son Tommy, an un-knowing Kat blamed and confronted Phil. With the pressure of rival gangster Jonah Tyler on their backs, the future marriage was in doubt. Kat was also suspicious of the Phil's involvement with long time lover, Sharon Watts. She was appalled to find out that Sharon had been visiting Phil in secret, though it eventually became clear that it was on purely platonic terms. Under pressure and at risk in the prison, Phil was the target of thugs. However, long time enemy, DI Keeble offered him a life line. She would get him out of there...on one condition. Phil would have to be an informant, a grass. Phil was initially adamant that he would not be a grass. However, when it came down to it, he agreed to take the deal. He was released from prison but on his return, he and Sharon shared a passionate moment and it was explicibly clear that Sharon still has romantic feelings for Phil. Though that is the case, Phil returned to Kat and the wedding plans got in to full swing. Kat was busy with her dress fitting when she was approached by policemen at her home. DI Keeble had planted drugs on her. This is part of a cunning twist in Keeble's rivalry with the Mitchells. However, Phil backed down and agreed, through reluctancy to grass up his own cousin, Billy Mitchell. The atmosphere became tense as Kat doubted Phil will be able to execute his plans.
September is set to be a highly emotional and poingnant month for Kat, as she marries her lover. Will it all go to plan? Her ex husband Alfie's return could surely throw complications in to the mixture.
